Roger Lloyd

Roger Lloyd is a lecturer in contemporary ceramics, and a freelance sculptor. He has exhibited in many parts of the world including Dubai, Helsinki, Cape Town, as well as in the UK.

His work is individually made and unique, and takes its influences from the natural world. His work is characterised by strongly stylized forms, and the use of unusual metallic glazes.

“All things living are extraordinary and are the starting point for all my sculptures.”

Roger spent many years in South Africa. He was a consultant at the internationally renowned Ardmore Studios in Kwazulu Natal, and also at Xun Kew Bushmen studios near Kimberley. Eventually he set up his own studio “The African Mask Company” in The Eastern Cape making wildlife ceramic masks. His ceramics have been exhibited all over South Africa.

Teaching in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape became increasingly important to him, which eventually involved him setting up various craft programmes including ceramics, leather and basket making. These workshops were designed to bring employment, and extra income, to some very deprived areas.

Roger’s most recent work is on British wildlife. Roger would like to thank Philip Kirkham for supplying his terrific photographs for his research.
